How to use the word finder
Type a rack, press Search, and read the best answers first.
Type the letters you have into the rack, up to fifteen of them in any order, and press Search. The finder checks every combination of your letters against a dictionary of 173,000 valid English words and returns everything that can be built from your rack. Results group by length with the longest words first, and the single best play carries a gold underline; you can switch to best-score or alphabetical order with one tap. Every result shows its tile score, and tapping any word shows a short definition.
If you have a blank tile, or you want to see what one extra letter would unlock, add a question mark. RETAIN? searches your six letters plus one of anything, and you can use up to three blanks in one search. Blanks are expensive to search (each one multiplies the work by twenty-six) but the finder still answers in a fraction of a second. Your last rack is remembered on this device, so coming back mid-game picks up where you left off.

The four filters below the rack narrow the results, and they work with or without rack letters. Set Starts with to hunt an opening letter, Ends with for suffixes, Contains for a letter you know is somewhere in the word, and Length when the puzzle tells you exactly how many squares you need to fill. Filters combine: starts with S, ends with E, length 5 is a perfectly good Wordle query. There is also a Check a word mode when all you need is a yes or no on whether something is a real word, with its score and meaning.
Finding words for Wordle

Wordle is a five-letter game, so start every search with the length filter set to 5. After your first guess or two, you know things the finder can use: a confirmed opening letter goes in Starts with, a confirmed final letter goes in Ends with, and yellow letters (right letter, wrong spot) go in Contains.

The finder can't pin a letter to the third square, so Contains A is the closest net. That query returns 47 candidates, a list you can actually read through before your next guess.
The lists people reach for most are already built as pages you can scan without searching: 5 letter words ending in E, 5 letter words ending in T, and words that start with S cover three of the most common endgame situations, and every list page has its own live filters for the letters you know and the letters you have ruled out.
Two habits improve most people's Wordle results. First, don't rule out repeated letters; words like LEVEL and ERROR trip players who assume five distinct letters. Second, when you're stuck between candidates, guess the word that tests the most new letters rather than the word you most want to be right. Strands, crosswords, and everything else
For NYT Strands, the length filter earns its keep: theme words tend to run six letters and up, and the spangram is longer still. Skim 6 letter words or 8 letter words when the board shows you a shape but not the word. Our Strands hints page restates the day's theme in plain English before it spoils anything. For crosswords, Contains plus Length is the combination that matters: a seven-letter answer with a J in it is a short list, and words with J, words with Z, and words with Q are where the rare-letter answers live. Tile-game players should keep 2 letter words close (short hooks turn one play into two) and 3 letter words do the same job one square wider.
Reading the results like a strategist
The sort order is strategy: score, length, or alphabet, your call.
Results open grouped by length, longest first, with the strongest play marked by the gold underline, and words sort alphabetically inside each group. Switch to Best score when the question is what to play right now, or A to Z when you're hunting for a word you half-remember. When a group is capped at five hundred words the count next to the heading still tells you the true total, so you always know whether a tighter filter is worth it.
It also pays to know when not to search at all. If your constraint is a single fixed pattern (every word with one specific start, end, or length) the pattern pages linked above are faster than typing a query, and they work as reference reading: 4 letter words is the workhorse list for quick tile games, while 10 letter words is where crossword long answers and spelling-test material live. Save the live finder for the queries only you have: your exact rack, your exact blanks, your exact combination of constraints.
About the dictionary
A public-domain list, plus the words it never had.
Most results on Wordton come from the ENABLE word list, a public-domain dictionary of roughly 172,800 English words that has been maintained and mirrored openly for decades. ENABLE was frozen in 1997, which means it has never heard of a blog, an app or a podcast, so we add a curated supplement of 487 words that entered English after that date and are now in mainstream dictionaries. The two together are the list the finder searches. When the finder says a word is valid, it means the word appears in that combined list: a deliberately generous standard that covers the words used across word games generally, without being tied to any single game's official dictionary. Specific games license specific lists, and those lists differ at the margins, so always defer to the dictionary built into whatever you're playing. We never claim a word is legal in a particular commercial game; what we promise is that everything here is a real English word you can look in the eye. Definitions come from WordNet, Princeton's lexical database, trimmed to one plain line each. The full list is browsable through the word lists hub; start with words that start with A and wander.
